The ninth issue of Al-Ru’ya (Azadi) Newspaper is published at a highly sensitive political and regional moment, as rapid transformations continue to reshape the Middle East and place the nation-state, the concept of legitimacy, and the future of its peoples before unprecedented challenges. The region is no longer experiencing temporary crises; rather, it is undergoing a profound process of transformation in which internal conflicts intersect with regional and international rivalries, while geopolitical considerations converge with economic, security, and strategic developments.
At the heart of these transformations stands Syria, facing one of the most complex periods since the establishment of its modern state. Amid efforts to rebuild state institutions, the persistence of economic and social crises, and the absence of a comprehensive political settlement, fundamental questions concerning constitutional legitimacy, popular representation, and the future of the state remain unresolved. In this context, appointments to political institutions—particularly the parliament—have sparked legitimate debate over the nature of representation, the limits of political participation, and the possibility of building institutions that genuinely reflect the will of the people within a democratic constitutional framework founded on free elections, political pluralism, and the rule of law.
Meanwhile, Syria's humanitarian and economic crisis continues to deepen at an alarming pace. Years of war and economic collapse have pushed millions into poverty and deprivation, while hunger, food insecurity, the erosion of purchasing power, and the deterioration of essential public services have become part of everyday life. Consequently, reconstruction cannot be reduced to rebuilding infrastructure alone; it must begin with rebuilding people, restoring confidence in public institutions, and launching a productive economic model based on justice, transparency, the rule of law, and sustainable development, rather than one dependent on perpetual crises and external aid.
At the regional level, the Middle East is witnessing strategic transformations that extend far beyond conventional military conflicts, encompassing competition over energy resources, trade corridors, technology, water security, and geopolitical influence. Amid these developments, the rights of peoples, human rights, and democratic values continue, in many cases, to be subordinated to international strategic interests rather than guided by the principles of international law and justice. This reality calls for a fundamental reassessment of the future of the regional order and the mechanisms required to achieve lasting peace and stability.
Against this backdrop, the ninth issue of Al-Ru’ya (Azadi) Newspaper presents a collection of political, legal, and intellectual analyses that move beyond reporting daily events to examining their underlying causes and anticipating their future implications. This issue features studies and articles on the Syrian economy, constitutional legitimacy, the Kurdish political movement, the right of peoples, language and identity, women's rights, as well as a range of strategic and intellectual topics. It is published with the firm conviction that serious journalism is not merely a reflection of reality, but an active partner in shaping public awareness, fostering a culture of dialogue, and defending the values of freedom, justice, democracy, and the rule of law.
